Why include an index?

An index adds value because it provides the audiences of printed and electronic documents with fast and easy access to the information contained within the document. Book purchasing decisions are often made based on a review of the topics contained in the index. Links to additional information about indexing may be found here.

“Whenever a collection of information, by reason of its size, its location, or the medium on which it is stored, cannot be scanned in its entirety by any would-be user, the quality of the index determines its value perhaps more than any other factor.”
Jessica Milstead, as quoted by Nancy Mulvany in Indexing Books (1994)

“The value of any book of nonfiction will be enhanced by a well-prepared index; without one, although the text may contain a wealth of information, the subject matter is largely inaccessible.”
